Umi Control Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Umi Control revolves around the Field Spell Card Umi or its upgrade: A Legendary Ocean. This deck utilizes old and new cards that is greatly connected to Umi, hence the name of the deck.

Most of this deck’s power will be unleashed once A Legendary Ocean hits the field, as it enables the full effect of your monsters. This also lowers the level of all Water Attribute monsters in your hand, making Ocean Dragon Lord – Kairyu-Shin easier to summon. This also sometimes disrupts opponent’s Synchro and XYZ play if they use Water monsters for its materials.

Ocean Dragon Lord – Kairyu-Shin is the win condition of the deck. Once empowered with Umi, this deck will go on full throttle with its control capabilities. Kairyu-Shin lets you search Umi-related spell/trap cards from the deck. But the main selling point of this card is its Kaiser Colosseum-like effect, in which both players cannot control multiple non-water monsters on the field.

Electric Jellyfish is the one that lets you summon Kairyu-Shin if you don’t have Umi active. This also negates monster and spell effects while increasing its attack!

Mega Fortress Whale lets you hit big numbers by ignoring the opponent’s monster by directly attacking them.

Doom Kraken is a type of disruption that lets you Special Summon this card by bouncing one of your monsters, and also destroying your opponent’s monster. You can also stop an opponent’s attack with this card.

Warrior of Atlantis lets you search A Legendary Ocean by discarding itself.

Fish Sonar adds consistency to your deck as it allows you to search any Level 7 or lower Umi-related monster from the deck to hand. This also lets you special summon a Normal Monster from the deck so long that Umi is active.

Sea Stealth II provides Water monsters immunity to non-water monster effects. This is also named Umi while on the Field or Graveyard.

Ice Barrier disrupts your opponent’s attack while also negating their effects and changing their attack to 0. Banishing this in the Graveyard lets you search for a water monster from the deck.

Sea Stealth Attack lets you activate Umi even on the opponent’s turn. Also provides protection to your back row and water monster on the field.

Kairyu-Shin’s Dark Reef lets you summon Umi-related monsters from your deck.

Core Combos and Interactions

Basic Kairyu-Shin Setup 1

There’s a lot of different ways of summoning Kariyu-Shin on board. Below are sample game states in which you can Summon Kairyu-Shin.

Card(s) Needed on Hand Step Description 1 If you don’t have A Legendary Ocean in your hand, activate Warrior of Atlantis to search it from the deck. 2 Activate A Legendary Ocean. This will reduce the Level of the Kairyu-Shin in your hand by 1. 3 With its level reduce, Normal Summon Kariyu-Shin.

Basic Kairyu-Shin Setup 2

Even without A Legendary Ocean there’s still a way to summon Kairyu-Shin from hand.

Card(s) Needed on Hand Step Description 1 Normal Summon Electric Jellyfish from hand. 2 Activate Electric Jellyfish‘s on Summon effect, send A Legendary Ocean from the Deck to the Graveyard to Special Summon Kairyu-Shin from hand.

Basic Kairyu-Shin Setup 3

If Kairyu-Shin is the one missing in your hand:

Card(s) Needed on Hand Step Description 1 Activate Foolish Burial Goods. 2 Send Ice Barrier from the Deck to the Graveyard. 3 Activate Ice Barrier by Banishing it from the Graveyard, targetting Kairyu-Shin from the deck and sending it to the Graveyard. Add the same Kairyu-Shin from the Graveyard to the hand. 4 Activate A Legendary Ocean 5 Now with its Level reduced by 1, Normal Summon Kairyu-Shin from your hand.

Boss Monsters

Ocean Dragon Lord – Kairyu-Shin Ocean Dragon Lord – Kariyu-Shin is a Kaiser Colosseum on legs as long as Umi is active on the field. Kairyu-shin also lets you add important spell/trap from the deck to hand. Electric Jellyfish Electric Jellyfish offers a Monster or Spell effect negation as long as Umi is on the field while also gaining attack. This also lets you summon Water Monster from hand. Mega Fortress Whale Mega Fortress Whale is your main attacker of the deck. This lets all your Water Monsters to attack directly as long as Umi is on the field.

Umi Control Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against Umi Control

Mermail

Umi Control heavily counters decks that are not Water Attribute focus, but Mermail is a Water combo-heavy deck. With Kairyu-shin only preventing non-Water-type decks from playing, Mermail does not care about its effects.Deep Sea Mermail Deck List and Card Guide

Marincess

Another Water-centric deck, Marincess is an Aggro deck that focuses on summoning big monsters that are also unaffected by card effects. Marincess also has a strong recovery rate. Thus, making it harder to shut down. A Legendary Ocean will also backfire since they also boost Water Monsters’ attack on both fields.Marincess Deck List and Card Guide

Swordsoul

Swordsoul Supreme Sovereign – Chengying singlehandedly makes this matchup harder as Chengying banishes cards on the field. If A Legendary Ocean gets banished, it is hard for Umi Control to bounce back.Swordsoul Deck List and Card Guide

Best Cards to Tech Against Umi Control

Skill Drain Despite being a Control Deck itself, Umi Control lives and dies on Kairyu-shin‘s strong floodgate effect. Rendering it useless marks the downfall of the deck. Harpie’s Feather Duster Harpie’s Feather Duster or any similar Spell/Trap removal like Cosmic Cyclone hardly counters this deck. If A Legendary Ocean got destroyed, the cogs of this deck will slow down and potentially stop working. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring With only a simple line of play, getting disrupted on searching A Legendary Ocean can be a lethal hit on this deck. Anti-Spell Fragrance Going Second, this is a tough floodgate to face since having to set A Legendary Ocean for a whole turn greatly slows the play of this deck.
